The Power Pup Downloader is a programmer/tuner that downloads horsepower and performance enhancing programs into 2003-2007 Dodge Cummins with either a 5.9L or 6.7L diesel engine in one SKU (stock keeping unit). The downloader offers up to three different Engine Tunes above stock to accomodate various driving conditions; read below for recommended use.

Engine Tuning Programs

The engine tuning options below describe what tunes are available through the Power Pup and their recommended use.

• Stock: Choosing the Stock engine tune will result in no change to engine horsepower output. All other downloader features can still be accessed if the Stock engine tune is chosen.

• Tow: This engine tune is recommended for use while towing, it is a mild tune that increases performance by 40 to 50 horsepower. This is the only tune that we recommend you tow with other than stock.

• Performance: This engine tune will yield up to 75 extra horsepower. Pyrometer and boost gauges are highly recommended while using this tune.

• Extreme: This engine tune will yield up to 120 extra horsepower. Pyrometer and boost gauges are highly recommended while using this tune. This tune is not available for the ‘07 6.7L motor.

AutoLoc:
The BD AutoLoc is a computer that commands the torque convertor lock-up clutch to stay applied when an exhaust brake is engaged. The AutoLoc ensures that 100% of the retarding force is being transferred in 3rd and 4th gears, thus, transmission oil temperatures remain low because convertor slippage no longer occurs in these gears. The lock-up clutch and brake automatically disengage at low speeds to prevent stalling and transmission and convertor damage. The convertor lock up clutch applies with accelerator pedal pressure, and the AutoLoc captures this signal. After shifting out or into overdrive in Dodge trucks, apply heavy accelerator pedal pressure or quickly release the pedal and the lock up clutch will engage. Exhaust brakes cause high automatic fluid temperatures due to the torque converter slippage and without a AutoLoc only 10-80% of the retarding force is transferred through the (unlocked) fluid coupling of a torque convertor. You can drive the truck with the AutoLoc engaged all the time. If you experience a shutter when you slow down in over drive with the AutoLoc engaged, you need to have the AutoLoc reset to disengage at a higher vehicle speed. However, variances occur due to rear ratios and tire sizes.

TorqLoc:
Torque converters in the newer trucks have 2 stages: (1) a fluid coupling occurs first when you are starting, accelerating or pulling up a big hill, (2) when you are cruising at a constant speed the lock up portion of the converter is engaged and 100% of each rpm is transferred through the converter, just like a standard clutch. With the TorqLoc toggle switch in the first position the lock up clutch is engaged and 100% of the rpm is transferred, transmission temperatures remain low and engine retarders work at 100%. This position is manual and should only be used manually just like a gear would be selected. Factory convertor (and aftermarket) clutch and drive clutch designs have torque limitations and this function should only be used under light load and light power conditions. A adjustable pressure switch is available to disengage the lock up clutch once a set boost pressure or load has been achieved. The second position converts the application back to stock operation or it can be wired to unloc the convertor. The third position is an AutoLoc position that only maintains a lock up when the stock computer has already established a circuit. This position can be safely selected for retarding or under heavy power and load applications. This position can be selected for every day driving in all situations. The TorqLoc also has an overdrive inverter option to have the transmission start in drive. The lock up can be set to hold on untill 5-10 MPH if you have 2nd gear lock up for slow driving condidtions.

Peak levels are saved in memory and can be viewed after a run. The exhaust temperatures are monitored with a Pyrometer probe inserted in the exhaust flow. The probe can be mounted before of after the turbocharger. If mounted after the turbo the temperatures will vary from 300° F to 1000° F. If mounted before the turbo temperatures of 300° F to 1200° F will be normal working levels. Select the temperatures that should not be exceeded and the numbers will flash when it is attained. It is hard to have too much turbocharger boost pressure but if you have too little under a hard pull the result can be high operating temperatures. Transmission oil temperatures will reflect how hard you are working the transmission. The oil begins to break down quickly once it reaches 270° F. Higher temperatures cause transmission life to shorten, set the limit at the 250° F and increase the operating life. We can also monitor the fuel transfer pump pressure on the ISB electronic engines. The probe can be mounted before of after the turbocharger. If mounted after the turbo the temperatures will vary from 300° F to 1000° F. If mounted before the turbo temperatures of 300° F to 1200° F will be normal working levels. Select the temperatures that should not be exceeded and the numbers will flash when it is attained. It is hard to have too much turbocharger boost pressure but if you have too little under a hard pull the result can be high operating temperatures. Transmission oil temperatures will reflect how hard you are working the transmission. The oil begins to break down quickly once it reaches 270° F. Higher temperatures cause transmission life to shorten, set the limit at the 250° F and increase the operating life. We can also monitor the fuel transfer pump pressure on the ISB electronic engines.     The Edge EZ module allows maximum fueling at full turbo boost and provides an additional 65 rear wheel horsepower and an additional 150 foot pounds of torque.     TST has been running the PowerMaxCR (PMCR) since October '02 and finally released it for sale in December of '03 for the Cummins Common Rail Ram Diesel.
    We have been testing stock Dodge common rail trucks since May '02 and have had about a hundred different '03, '04, '04.5, & '05 Rams on our dyno, HO�s, Automatics, and one 5 speed California 235 hp version. Except for the California truck, we are seeing much better stock power to the ground than the previous engines.
    The maximum power gains we've seen to date is an extra 190 whp (wheel horsepower) at 2900 rpm and an extra 580 pound-feet of torque at 1700 rpm. The only power upgrade was our plug-in computer, no wires to cut or Scotchlock. These numbers were obtained with the stock turbo (added a boost elbow to turn boost up to about 40 psi to help reduce exhaust gas temperature), stock exhaust, and stock air filter (enlarged the opening into the air filter box). We also had to install an aftermarket clutch as the stock clutch gave up at about 800 lb-ft. A pusher fuel pump was added in series with the stock lift pump when we went above 120 extra wheel horsepower as engine would miss without it.

    We are advancing timing and extending the open time in the injector solenoid on the main injection pulse. We do not extend the pilot pulse and do NOT increase fuel rail pressure, which has been shown to damage the high pressure rail components. Most competitive computers currently turn up rail pressure and they are very limited to power and torque increases before reaching the rail pressure relief valve limit.

    The PowerMaxCR has 10 power levels @ 2900 rpm and 10 torque levels @ 1600 rpm that are adjustable under power on the fly. Setting the power level and the torque level on zero turns truck power back to stock. Power level #1 advances timing only for good fuel mileage, reduced exhaust temperature, and adds about 30 wheel horsepower but does not add extra fuel. Power levels 2 thru 9 add increasing amounts of fuel and 20 horsepower per step at 2900 rpm. Each torque setting step adds 60 additional foot pounds of torque at 1600 rpm.

    We offer the PowerMaxCR computer with digital boost and pyro built in such that maximum exhaust temperature can be user selected. The PowerMaxCR is also offered without gauges for those who wish to use analog gauges. The unit without gauges retails for $725 and the unit with built in gauges retails at $849.

    Towing with the PowerMaxCR will be limited to about 650 to 700 pound-feet of torque (level 3 or 4 on the torque setting) for stock automatics. TST recommends a heavy duty input shaft, a valve body change, and a strong torque converter to take that torque on up to 1000 pound-feet to use the full torque of the PMCR. Stock manual clutches are limited to about 800 pound-feet of torque (level 4- 6 on the torque setting). Clutches are available that permits using the full torque available from the PMCR.
    Exhaust temperatures will limit towing total wheel horsepower to about 340 to 360 wheel horsepower (power levels settings 3 to 6). Larger turbos are the only thing we have found to reduce exhaust temperatures such that more towing power can be used (maybe 20 to 40 more horsepower), but larger turbos typically have surge problems at lower engine speeds and high altitudes loosing some of the gains. Twin series turbos are the only setup that keeps exhaust temperatures safe with the PMCR on its top setting, however these are expensive and would typically require studding of the head to keep head gaskets from leaking.
    Advancing timing with power level 1 or above should improve fuel mileage 5 to 10 % if the driver can resist the temptation to use lots of power. Don�t be misled by the in-cab mpg meter in that it does not know about the extra fuel we add thus it shows really big improvements in mileage.
    Early PowerMaxCR�s would set OBD2 codes in some case on some trucks but the newer units appear to have solved most of the code issues.
    The earlier PowerMax computers for '98 to '02 Rams diesels will not work on the '03 and later engines.
    For installation we Velcro the PowerMaxCR computer to the lid of the Fuse & Relay Center underhood. There are three injector plugins to be made on the driver side of the valve cover, a MAP sensor plugin, a camshaft sensor plugin, a crankshaft sensor plugin, two 12 volt connections inside the Fuse & Relay Center, and a ground connection. The wired remote control plugs in to the PowerMaxCR computer and that wire is routed inside the cab. There are no wires to cut or splice.
    These units work on the new 04.5/05 Ram 325 hp/600 torque and they appear to work very well. The wastegate setup is different with the 325/600 engine and it takes a few more minutes to connect than with the 03 and 04 engine.

    van Aaken SmartBox V5 and R

    We currently offer two versions of van Aaken Smartbox for this model which are known as the van Aaken SmartBoxR and the van Aaken SmartBoxV5.

    Both these van Aaken SmartBoxes increase power by 60hp and torque by 159lbs ft at 2000rpm.

    The extra power is achieved by carefully increasing the fuel delivery and advancing the injection timing. Advancing the injection timing also serves to reduce Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGTs) which remain close to stock levels with the van Aaken SmartBox fitted.

    Both the van Aaken SmartBoxR and the van Aaken SmartBoxV5 have been specifically designed to be fitted (and removed) within minutes. They use high quality plugs to mate in with the original system.

    To install the van Aaken SmartBoxR, simply unplug the loom from the back of the Diesel injection pump and plug the van Aaken SmartBoxR in between the pump and the loom. It also has a connection into the map sensor.

    The van Aaken SmartBoxV5 has been designed for those who prefer not to unplug the loom from the back of the Diesel injection pump: it connects into the diagnostic plug and into the map sensor.

    A built in boost delimiter is included on both the van Aaken SmartBoxR and the van Aaken SmartBoxV5 for full adjustability. No engine seals are broken during the fitting of either the Aaken SmartBoxR or the van Aaken SmartBoxV5 and you do not have to cut wires or feed wires through the bulkhead unless you wish to fit an optional power level switch.

    In both cases, although fitting is simple, full easy to follow fitting instructions describing mounting and plugging the units in are supplied. Full details of both the van Aaken SmartBox R and V5 are shown below.
